Duress

Duress was originally released in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, quickly becoming a staple in competitive Magic: The Gathering for its ability to strip key spells from an opponent's hand. The specific version found in the 2001 World Championship Decks was issued as a commemorative reprint, replicating the tournament-winning deck of Tom van de Logt. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast as a way for players to experience the high-level strategies used by professionals during the World Championships, featuring unique gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures.

The card’s classic illustration by Christopher Rush captures the oppressive, dark nature of discard effects, a signature style that defined much of the early game's aesthetic. By the time of the 2001 set, Duress was already considered an essential tool in black-aligned control decks. The 2001 World Championship series was well-received by the player base for offering a window into the professional meta, allowing collectors and players alike to own a physical representation of the cards that dominated the world stage that year.
