Healing Salve

Healing Salve was first introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Fifth Edition core set with updated card frames and artwork. As one of the original 'Boons' cycle of spells, it was designed to establish the core identity of the White mana color, which emphasizes life gain, protection, and defensive utility. The card was created by Richard Garfield during the game's initial development phase to provide players with a low-cost, versatile survival tool that could mitigate early-game pressure.

The art featured on the Fifth Edition version of Healing Salve is a classic representation of the game's early fantasy aesthetic, prioritizing traditional illustration techniques. While the card is often cited by players as a cornerstone of introductory play, its utility has been widely debated over the decades due to the relative power of card-advantage spells compared to simple life gain effects. Despite these discussions, it remains a hallmark of Magic's foundational era and a recognizable piece of the game's early visual history.
