Healing Salve

Healing Salve was originally introduced as one of the core white spells in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993. As a low-cost instant, it was designed by Richard Garfield to provide players with a basic survival tool, reflecting the game's early emphasis on simple, flavorful utility spells. Its inclusion in the Fourth Edition, released in 1995, marked a period where the card served as a staple for newer players learning the mechanics of life gain and damage prevention.

The artwork for the Fourth Edition printing features the work of Jesper Myrfors, who served as the original art director for the game. His illustration captures the mystical, restorative essence of the spell, utilizing a minimalist fantasy aesthetic common to the early years of the hobby. While the card is often cited by competitive players for its low power level compared to later expansions, it remains a nostalgic touchstone that represents the fundamental design philosophy of the game's formative era.
