Healing Salve

Healing Salve was first released in the 1996 Introductory Two-Player Set for Magic: The Gathering. As one of the original white cards from the Alpha set, it was designed as a foundational 'common' card meant to introduce new players to the game’s core mechanics of life gain and damage prevention. Its inclusion in the Two-Player set served to provide beginners with a simple, illustrative example of how instant-speed spells can interact with combat or direct damage during a game.

The card’s classic illustration by Dan Frazier captures the simple, mystical aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering art. Frazier, a prolific artist in the game's nascent years, utilized a traditional fantasy style that prioritized clarity and thematic resonance over complex digital rendering. The card became a staple of early deck-building, often cited by long-time players for its role in defining the mechanical identity of white mana as a source of protection and recovery.
