Healing Salve

Healing Salve was originally released as one of the 'boons' in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the foundational white magic color identity. It was later reprinted in the 1998 Urza's Saga expansion, which shifted the game's art direction toward a more cohesive, narrative-driven aesthetic. The card serves as a quintessential example of early instant-speed life gain, reflecting the game's initial focus on straightforward utility spells.

The illustration for this iteration was provided by artist Quinton Hoover, a foundational figure in Magic's visual history known for his distinctive, flowing ink-and-watercolor style. Hoover's design sought to evoke a sense of spiritual restoration and calm, contrasting with the mechanical complexity that defined much of the Urza's Saga set. While it was a common card, it remains a nostalgic touchstone for players who associate the game's golden era with Hoover's signature artistic contributions.
