Healing Salve

Healing Salve was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as part of the core white mana mechanical identity. The card was intended to provide a foundational defensive option, offering players a choice between gaining life or preventing damage. By the time it was included in the 2009 Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic, the card had become a hallmark of early Magic design, representing a traditional, albeit mechanically dated, approach to resource management in the game.

The art for this iteration, illustrated by Donato Giancola, maintains the ethereal, restorative aesthetic established by earlier versions while showcasing his signature painterly style. Within the context of the Divine vs. Demonic duel deck, the card was positioned to represent the restorative power of the divine forces. The reception of the card in this set was largely nostalgic, as it served as a connection to the game's origins while highlighting the evolution of power levels in Magic: The Gathering over the preceding decade and a half.
