Provenance

Where it came from

The Rest in Peace card, numbered 6 in the 1990 Marvel Universe Series 1 trading card set, was released by Impel Marketing. This seminal set marked a turning point in the hobby by moving away from children's stickers and toward a premium, high-quality collector's format. The set was created to capitalize on the surging popularity of Marvel comic books at the time, offering fans a comprehensive overview of the publisher's vast roster of heroes and villains through vivid, full-color card stock.

The imagery for the set utilized a mix of original art and iconic panels sourced from the archives of various Marvel titles. Designed with a clean, border-heavy aesthetic that framed the character or scene, the cards were intended to be both accessible to younger readers and collectible for adult fans. The Rest in Peace card reflects the dramatic, high-stakes storytelling characteristic of the era, and the set as a whole is widely credited with establishing the standard for the modern superhero trading card market.
