Where it came from
Rest in Peace was released in 2012 as part of the Return to Ravnica expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a powerful sideboard tool for the White color identity, specifically intended to disrupt graveyard-reliant strategies by exiling all cards from all graveyards and preventing further cards from entering them. Its inclusion in the set reinforced the mechanical themes of the Azorius Senate, a guild focused on law, order, and judicial control.
The artwork for the card was created by Terese Nielsen, a prominent illustrator in the game's history. Nielsen’s depiction features a serene yet somber landscape reflecting the finality of the card's effect, prioritizing a sense of spiritual stillness over the aggressive imagery common in other Magic cards. Upon its release, it became a staple in eternal formats like Legacy and Modern, where its efficiency as a counter-measure against graveyard-based mechanics made it a highly regarded utility card among competitive players.
