Where it came from
Rest in Peace originated in the Magic: The Gathering expansion Avacyn Restored in 2012. It was designed as a powerful sideboard tool to disrupt graveyard-based strategies, reflecting the set's thematic focus on the struggle between the forces of light and the encroaching darkness of Innistrad. The card depicts the tranquil, sanctified tomb of a fallen warrior, emphasizing the permanent cessation of necromantic influence.
The art was created by Terese Nielsen, whose distinctive painterly style was a hallmark of the game for many years. Her illustration captures a solemn, hallowed atmosphere through soft lighting and geometric stone motifs. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a definitive answer to graveyard interactions in Eternal formats, earning its place as a staple utility card that frequently reappears in subsequent curated pools like The List.
