Where it came from
Smothering Tithe first debuted in the Ravnica Allegiance expansion in 2019, quickly becoming a staple in the Commander format due to its ability to tax opponents' card draw. This specific version was reprinted in the 2023 Commander Masters set, intended to provide players with a premium, readily accessible version of a highly sought-after utility card within the format's metagame.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Zack Stella, who aimed to capture the essence of an Orzhov Syndicate transaction, emphasizing the bureaucratic and taxing nature of the guild. The design centers on the visual weight of heavy gold and clerical authority, effectively communicating the card’s mechanical function through its striking, opulent aesthetic, which has been widely praised by players for its thematic consistency.
