Where it came from
Smothering Tithe first appeared in the Ravnica Allegiance expansion in 2019, quickly establishing itself as a powerhouse in the Commander format due to its unique tax mechanic. The card forces opponents to choose between paying two generic mana or allowing the controller to create a Treasure token, creating significant board pressure in multiplayer games where mana efficiency is paramount.
The Double Masters 2022 version, featuring artwork by Anna Steinbauer, was released as part of a premium reprint set designed to provide players with highly sought-after staples. Steinbauer’s ethereal and elegant style focuses on the divine, bureaucratic nature of the Orzhov Syndicate, capturing the card's theme of mandatory tribute through a stark, luminous aesthetic that contrasts with the darker, grittier original printing.
