Where it came from
Smothering Tithe was first introduced in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering expansion Ravnica Allegiance. Designed to be a powerful white-aligned enchantment, it serves as a tax effect that punishes opponents for drawing cards unless they pay two mana. The card was created to provide white decks in the Commander format with a consistent form of ramp and card advantage, addressing a long-standing mechanical weakness in the color's ability to keep pace with green and blue resource acceleration.
The illustrative work for this specific promo version was crafted to emphasize the oppressive, bureaucratic nature of the Orzhov Syndicate, the guild from which the card hails. By featuring imagery of debt, tithes, and ecclesiastical authority, the art aligns with the set's focus on the power dynamics within Ravnica. Upon its release, the card was immediately recognized as a staple for multiplayer formats, eventually becoming one of the most widely played and sought-after white cards in the history of the game.
