Where it came from
Smothering Tithe first debuted in the Ravnica Allegiance expansion in 2019, quickly establishing itself as a cornerstone of the Commander format due to its ability to impose a heavy tax on opponents who draw extra cards. The card is mechanically rooted in the Orzhov Syndicate, the white-black guild of Ravnica, which is known for its predatory financial practices, ecclesiastical aesthetic, and focus on debt and tithes.
The Commander Masters version, numbered 57, features updated art by Greg Staples that leans into the card's theme of bureaucratic avarice. This reprint was designed to increase accessibility to a highly sought-after staple, maintaining the original's punishing taxation effect while integrating it into the premium, draftable environment of the Commander Masters set, where it remains a powerful tool for resource parity in multiplayer games.
