Where it came from
Smothering Tithe first appeared in the Ravnica Allegiance set as a powerful white enchantment designed to tax opponents for drawing extra cards, quickly becoming a staple in Commander formats. The Secret Lair Drop version, bearing collector number 7009, was released as part of a curated series of specialized reprints that reimagined classic cards through unique, stylized artistic lenses. These drops were developed by Wizards of the Coast to offer players high-end, collectible variations of functional cards while fostering a secondary market centered on artistic expression rather than standard set rotation.
This specific iteration features artwork by Abigail Larson, whose signature gothic and ethereal illustrative style contrasts sharply with the traditional high-fantasy aesthetic of the core set. Larson’s design utilizes intricate linework and a muted, atmospheric color palette to lean into the thematic concept of a ghostly, demanding tax collector. Upon its release, the card was well received by the community for its distinct departure from standard Magic: The Gathering visual conventions, cementing it as a sought-after aesthetic upgrade for players seeking to personalize their decks.
