What it does
Whenever an opponent draws a card, that player may pay 2 generic mana. If the player doesn't, you create a Treasure token. (It's an artifact with "tap, Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.")
"Oh, how I love gold. I'd eat and breathe it if I could."— Leland, tax collector

Where it came from
Smothering Tithe was originally introduced in the 2019 Ravnica Allegiance set, designed to provide white decks in the Commander format with a reliable source of ramp and card advantage. Its mechanics draw upon the color's thematic association with taxation and law enforcement, forcing opponents to pay a mana cost for every card drawn or allow the owner to generate Treasure tokens. This unique tax-based interaction quickly established the card as a staple in the high-powered Commander ecosystem, addressing a long-standing criticism that white lacked sufficient mana acceleration compared to green.
The Double Masters 2022 release featured this specific iteration, identified as collector number 342, which utilizes an updated aesthetic treatment consistent with the premium nature of the set. While the original Ravnica Allegiance version featured standard art, the Double Masters printing served to reprint high-demand utility cards for a new generation of players. It was designed to balance visual appeal with functional utility, ensuring that collectors could acquire a tournament-grade card with distinct set-specific branding.
