Where it came from
Valorous Stance was first released in the 2015 set Fate Reforged, later appearing in the 2020 Jumpstart product as card number 136. Designed as an uncommon white instant, the card reflects the mechanics of the Tarkir block, which emphasized duality and the choices warriors must make between offense and defense. Its flexibility allows players to either save a creature from destruction or eliminate a large threat, a utility that cemented its role as a reliable inclusion in limited play environments.
The art for the card, illustrated by Jason Rainville, captures the essence of a heroic intervention. Rainville’s work for the Magic: The Gathering franchise often focuses on dramatic lighting and the kinetic energy of combat, and this piece was specifically composed to highlight the protective aspect of white mana magic. Upon its release, it was well-received by the player base for its efficient mana cost and its ability to answer two distinct problems within a single card slot.
