Where it came from
Valorous Stance was released in early 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the time-displaced narrative of the Tarkir block, the card reflects the set's focus on the duality between the dragon-worshipping clans and the legendary khans of the past. It was designed as an uncommon white instant, intended to offer players a versatile tool capable of either protecting a creature or removing a significant threat from the battlefield, reinforcing the set's emphasis on tactical decision-making.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a celebrated artist within the Magic community known for her ability to render expressive, cinematic scenes. Villeneuve aimed to capture a moment of stoic bravery, depicting a warrior standing firmly against overwhelming odds. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its efficient mana cost and flexibility, quickly becoming a staple in both Limited formats and various Constructed deck archetypes throughout the life of the Tarkir block.
