Provenance

Where it came from

The Saproling token, identified as collector number 22 in the Commander Legends Tokens set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2020. It was designed to support the set's focus on the Commander format, providing players with a physical representation of a creature type historically generated by various green-aligned spells and permanents. These tokens were included in randomized booster packs as an accessory to the main gameplay experience, intended to streamline board states during multiplayer matches.

The artwork for this particular iteration of the Saproling reflects the aesthetic direction of the Commander Legends set, which drew inspiration from the high-fantasy lore of the Multiverse. While Wizards of the Coast utilizes a rotating team of illustrators for token cards, the design philosophy emphasizes readability and clarity to ensure that players can easily distinguish the token from other cards on the battlefield. It remains a functional piece of Magic: The Gathering history, prized by players for its utility in decks featuring token-generating themes.
