Saproling

The Saproling token from the Shards of Alara set was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2008 as a gameplay accessory. In Magic: The Gathering, tokens are not found in standard booster packs as playable cards but are instead used to represent temporary creatures created by various spells and abilities during a match. The introduction of these tokens in the Shards of Alara block standardized the aesthetic of common creature types, providing players with physical markers for the game's increasingly complex board states.

The illustration was commissioned from artist Trevor Claxton, who leaned into the organic and overgrown aesthetic of the Jund shard from the Alara setting. Claxton’s design captures the Saproling as a symbiotic, plant-like entity, characterized by its earthen tones and fluid, mossy anatomy. The design reflects the visual language of the set, which focused on the distinct, vibrant environments of a fractured plane, and it remains a staple in the collections of players who utilize green-aligned deck strategies.
