Saproling

The Saproling token, identified by collector number 14 in the Modern Masters 2017 set, serves as a functional game piece for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens represent the fungus creatures frequently generated by green-aligned cards throughout the history of the game. Modern Masters 2017 was designed as a curated set intended to provide players with access to staple cards from the modern competitive format, utilizing updated artwork to reflect the evolving aesthetic standards of Wizards of the Coast.

The artistic direction for tokens in Modern Masters 2017 emphasizes a high-fantasy visual language, aligning the creature designs with the flavor of the sets featured in the draft environment. As these items are produced in high quantities to support playability, their value is primarily utility-based rather than historical. The design process for these tokens prioritizes clarity and thematic consistency, ensuring that players can distinguish different creature types on the battlefield while maintaining the cohesive look of the set’s broader artistic cycle.
