Where it came from
The Saproling token, identified as collector number 8 within the Forgotten Realms Commander set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021 to support the Magic: The Gathering crossover with Dungeons & Dragons. In the mechanics of the game, Saprolings are recurring creatures often generated by cards themed around fungi or nature-based druidic magic, serving as expendable utility units on the battlefield.
This specific token features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a vivid, earthy aesthetic to capture the parasitic and organic nature of the creature. The design was intended to fit seamlessly into the dungeon-crawling flavor of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms expansion, providing players with a visually distinct representation of the classic creature type that has been a staple of the game since its early iterations.
