Where it came from
The Saproling token from the Explorers of Ixalan set was released in 2017 as part of a standalone multiplayer board game experience. Designed for Magic: The Gathering, these tokens represent the temporary creatures created by various spells and abilities within the game. The artwork, consistent with the vibrant and primal aesthetic of the Ixalan plane, emphasizes the lush, jungle-based theme that defined this particular set, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between the vegetation and the sentient fungal life forms of the region.
The design of the token reflects a move by Wizards of the Coast to provide specialized, thematic visual cues for game states that were previously represented by generic placeholders. Created to help players track the board state during the strategic, faction-based gameplay of Explorers of Ixalan, the token was received as a functional and aesthetic upgrade for players. By grounding the mechanical role of the Saproling within the specific visual lore of the set, the illustration reinforces the immersive nature of the game’s world-building efforts.
