Saproling

The Saproling token, featured as part of the Planechase Anthology collection released in 2016, serves as a functional game piece for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were designed to represent the creature type summoned by various spells and abilities within the game, particularly those rooted in themes of verdant growth and fungal reclamation. The artwork, consistent with the modern aesthetic of the game, emphasizes the organic and slightly alien appearance of these forest-dwelling entities.

This specific iteration was distributed as part of a boxed set intended to compile and celebrate the Planechase format, which utilizes oversized cards to simulate traveling between different dimensions. The design process for tokens of this era focused on clarity and thematic immersion, ensuring that players could easily distinguish between various types of creatures on the board. The card was well-received by the player base for its utility in gameplay and its standardized visual language, which helped maintain immersion during complex multiplayer sessions.
