Where it came from
The Zombie token from the Magic 2010 (M10) core set represents a pivotal shift in the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. Released in July 2009, the M10 set introduced a modernized card frame and a standardized approach to token representation. This specific token was designed to accompany cards like Cemetery Reaper and Endless Ranks of the Dead, providing a consistent physical marker for players to track their battlefield states during gameplay.
The illustration for this token was created by Kev Walker, a prolific and long-standing contributor to the game’s aesthetic. Walker’s depiction leans into a gritty, high-fantasy style, emphasizing the decay and relentless nature synonymous with the creature type. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its clean, readable layout and the evocative character design that aligned with the refreshed, streamlined artistic direction Wizards of the Coast implemented during this era.
