Where it came from
The Zombie token, numbered 8 in the Innistrad set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2011. It was designed to support the set's primary mechanical theme of graveyard interaction and tribal synergies, specifically serving as the manifestation of various cards like Army of the Damned or Rooftop Storm. Tokens in this era moved toward a standardized template that clearly differentiated them from main-deck cards while maintaining the atmospheric, gothic horror aesthetic central to the Innistrad block.
The artwork for this token was illustrated by Ryan Yee, who aimed to capture the decaying, shambling essence of classic horror tropes consistent with the plane of Innistrad. The design features a weathered, blue-skinned undead figure, emphasizing the desaturated color palette and grim tone that defined the expansion's artistic direction. Upon release, the token was well-received by players for its thematic coherence, helping to solidify the identity of black-aligned decks within the Innistrad limited and constructed environments.
