Where it came from
The Cat token was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was specifically produced to serve as a physical representation of the creature type created by cards such as Kemba, Kha Regent, which instructs players to create 2/2 white Cat creature tokens during their upkeep. These tokens are integral to gameplay mechanics, allowing players to track board states efficiently during matches.
The artwork for this token was illustrated by Kev Walker, a prolific and long-standing contributor to the game's visual identity. Walker utilized a distinct, highly textured aesthetic that captures the biomechanical, metallic-organic fusion characteristic of the Mirrodin plane. The design emphasizes the feline creature's integration into the setting's unique environment, blending traditional fantasy anatomy with the signature aesthetic of the Scars of Mirrodin block.
