Where it came from
The Cat token was released as part of the Foundations set for Magic: The Gathering in 2024. Tokens in this game serve as representational markers for creatures created by other spells or abilities rather than being part of a player's starting deck. This specific design was introduced to standardize the visual representation of Cat creatures across various gameplay interactions, reflecting the set's focus on foundational elements that anchor the modern Magic experience.
The illustration was crafted to align with the cohesive art direction of the Foundations set, which emphasizes clear, recognizable iconography suitable for tabletop play. By providing a dedicated physical representation for Cat tokens, the design aims to reduce ambiguity during matches. The artwork was received as a functional and aesthetically pleasing addition to the game, adhering to the established creature type styling that players have come to expect from Wizards of the Coast.
