Provenance

Where it came from

The Elephant token, numbered 11 in the Eternal Masters set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in June 2016. This set was designed as a curated reprint series intended to bring high-value and historically significant cards back into circulation for players of the Magic: The Gathering Legacy and Vintage formats. Tokens like this one were included in booster packs to serve as visual aids for gameplay effects, specifically for cards that create Elephant creature tokens.

The artwork for this specific token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. Staples utilized a dramatic, earth-toned palette to render the creature with a sense of weight and tactile realism, reflecting the broader artistic direction of the Eternal Masters set, which sought to maintain a cohesive, high-fantasy tone consistent with the game’s legacy. It was well-received by players for its detailed rendering and its utility in the draft-heavy environment of the set.
