Where it came from
The Elephant token, numbered 9 in the Modern Masters 2015 set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in May 2015. Tokens of this nature serve as supplementary game pieces designed to represent temporary creatures created by various spell effects during a match of Magic: The Gathering. This specific card was introduced to support the limited-environment draft experience of the Modern Masters 2015 expansion, which sought to provide players with a curated selection of powerful reprints from previous sets.
The artwork for this token was illustrated by Johannes Voss. His design approach for this series emphasized a sense of scale and natural majesty, opting for a clean, painterly style that distinguishes the token from the more chaotic visual language found on standard playable cards. Within the community, the token was well-received for its evocative depiction, often noted for being a visually appealing piece of utility art that remains a staple for players utilizing green-white creature strategies.
