Birds of Paradise

The Birds of Paradise card has been a cornerstone of Magic: The Gathering since its debut in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, representing the quintessential green creature for mana acceleration. This specific iteration originates from the Secret Lair series, a specialty line introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019 to provide limited-run, artistically focused reprints of iconic cards. The drop featuring Birds of Paradise was designed to showcase unique, often avant-garde visual styles that diverge from the traditional fantasy aesthetic of the base game.

The art for this specific Secret Lair version was created by Ovidio Cartagena, who utilized a distinct, vibrant style reminiscent of traditional Mesoamerican art to pay homage to the creature's thematic roots in tropical flora and fauna. By blending intricate patterns with bold, earthy colors, the design team sought to elevate the card from a functional game piece into a collectible work of art. Upon release, this version was received warmly by the player community for its cultural resonance and high-quality production, becoming a favored choice for players looking to customize their decks with visually striking cards.
