Birds of Paradise

Birds of Paradise is one of the most iconic cards in Magic: The Gathering, originally debuting in the game's first set, Alpha, in 1993. It was created to provide a low-cost, green-aligned method for players to generate mana of any color, a fundamental utility in the game's mechanics. The Eighth Edition printing, released in 2003, was a significant milestone as it marked the transition to the modern card frame, which updated the aesthetic to improve readability and visual consistency across the expanding game.

The art featured on the Eighth Edition version was created by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more impressionistic or traditional fantasy styles of early editions to provide a more detailed, textured look. The bird, a staple of green deck building, was designed to represent the concept of mana ramp—the ability to accelerate a player's resource base early in the game. It remains highly regarded by long-time players for its balance and its essential role in competitive and casual deck construction throughout the decades.
