Where it came from
Birds of Paradise is one of the most iconic cards in Magic: The Gathering, originally appearing in the game's 1993 Alpha set. As a fundamental 'mana dork,' it provided players with a crucial way to accelerate their resource pool, becoming a staple in green-aligned decks for decades. This specific Secret Lair version, numbered 92, was released as part of a curated drop designed to celebrate the card's history through a fresh artistic lens.
The art for this iteration was commissioned to provide a stylized, contemporary aesthetic that contrasts with the traditional fantasy depictions of the creature. By choosing a unique artistic direction, the Secret Lair team aimed to appeal to long-term collectors and players who appreciate high-concept illustrations. The release was well-received by the community for its bold departure from the established visual identity of the character while retaining its classic utility in gameplay.
