Where it came from
Birds of Paradise was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set as one of Magic: The Gathering's iconic mana-producing creatures. Its design, featuring Christopher Rush’s vibrant, lush artwork, quickly established the card as a staple for green decks. The creature's ability to tap for any color of mana made it a foundational element of the game’s early tactical landscape.
The Collectors' Edition version was released in 1993 as a non-tournament legal set intended for collectors. It features a distinct square-cut corner and a gold-bordered back, distinguishing it from the standard play versions. While these cards were not meant for official competitive play, they are highly regarded by collectors today for preserving the original aesthetic and historical significance of the early Magic sets.
