Where it came from
Birds of Paradise was originally released in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as one of the game's foundational mana-fixing cards. It has since become one of the most iconic creatures in the history of Magic: The Gathering, recognized for its efficiency and its classic illustration by Mark Poole, which captures the lush, vibrant aesthetic of the game's early fantasy world.
The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in late 2022, was created as a commemorative, non-tournament-legal celebration of the game’s history. These cards feature the original Alpha art and borders but include a distinct back design to differentiate them from vintage cards. While the set received mixed reactions from the community due to its price point and limited availability, it serves as a high-fidelity tribute to the original cards that defined the game's early design philosophy.
