Where it came from
Birds of Paradise was originally printed in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a foundational mana-fixing creature. The International Collectors' Edition, released in 1993, was a non-tournament legal set produced as a promotional product for the European market. These cards are distinguished by their gold-bordered backs and square corners, intended to give players a chance to own iconic, rare artwork that was otherwise difficult to obtain.
The iconic illustration for Birds of Paradise was created by Mark Poole. His watercolor aesthetic captures the ethereal, avian nature of the creature, which has since become one of the most recognizable pieces of art in the game's history. While the International Collectors' Edition was initially met with mixed reactions due to its inability to be used in sanctioned play, it has since gained significant appreciation among collectors for its role in preserving early card designs and its distinct visual presentation.
