Where it came from
The Birds of Paradise card from the 2000 World Championship Decks was released as part of a series designed to replicate the specific deck lists used by the top eight finalists at the 2000 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These cards are easily identified by their unique gold-bordered frames and the specific player signature printed on the card face, serving as a pedagogical tool that allowed players to experience high-level competitive builds from that era.
The original art for Birds of Paradise was rendered by Mark Poole, whose illustration became a cornerstone of the game's early identity. His depiction of the creature emphasizes vibrant, ethereal plumage, grounding the card in the high-fantasy aesthetic that defined Magic's early sets. Within the context of the 2000 World Championship decks, this reprint remains a notable example of how Wizards of the Coast preserved competitive history while maintaining the distinct visual distinction between tournament-legal cards and commemorative releases.
