Birds of Paradise

The Birds of Paradise card from the 2002 World Championship Decks was released as part of a specialized boxed set meant to commemorate the Magic: The Gathering World Championships held in Sydney that year. These decks were exact, card-for-card recreations of the sixty-card main decks used by the top eight finalists in the tournament, allowing players to own and play with professional-level strategies. Unlike standard booster packs, these cards feature unique gold-bordered backs and the signature of the player who piloted the deck, serving as both a functional game piece and a historical souvenir of the competitive circuit.

The artwork for the Birds of Paradise was originally created by illustrator Mark Poole for the game's debut in 1993. His design, characterized by a vibrant, dreamlike depiction of a tropical avian creature, became one of the most iconic and enduring images in the game's history. By the time it was reprinted in the 2002 World Championship series, the card had solidified its status as a staple for green-aligned decks, prized for its ability to generate mana of any color. The inclusion in this specific product line underscores its importance in high-level play during the early 2000s competitive era.
