Where it came from
The Birds of Paradise card from the 1998 World Championship Decks was released as part of a commemorative product line designed to allow players to experience the specific deck lists used by top-tier competitors at the 1998 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These decks were printed with distinct gold-bordered backs and unique card faces to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards, serving as a snapshot of the competitive meta-game from that era.
The illustration for Birds of Paradise has been a staple of the game since its debut in the Alpha set, originally created by artist Mark Poole. His design aimed to capture an ethereal, avian grace, utilizing a vibrant color palette that signaled the creature's utility as a mana-producing staple. Within the context of the 1998 World Championship Decks, the inclusion of this card reflected its necessity in high-level competitive play, where its ability to accelerate resource development made it an essential component for green-based strategies.
