Where it came from
Dark Ritual originally debuted in the Alpha edition of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, quickly establishing itself as a fundamental piece of black mana ramp. Its inclusion in the 2022 Warhammer 40,000 Commander set marked a thematic convergence between Wizards of the Coast's trading card game and the grimdark science fiction universe created by Games Workshop. This version features new artwork that reinterprets the ritualistic essence of the spell through the lens of the Chaos gods, maintaining its mechanical identity as a high-velocity utility card.
The art for this specific variant was crafted to align with the aesthetic of the Chaos factions within the Warhammer 40,000 lore, emphasizing the dark, corrupted power synonymous with the Imperium's greatest threats. The design team focused on bridging the mechanical utility of the card with the intense, gothic visual language of the 41st millennium. Upon its release, the card was well-received by both Commander players and Warhammer enthusiasts for its effective integration of the two intellectual properties.
