Where it came from
Dark Ritual, numbered 131 in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Eternal collection, emerged as part of a crossover experiment designed to blend the gritty, high-fantasy mechanics of trading card games with the iconic aesthetics of the TMNT universe. The card was crafted to mirror the function of classic dark-mana-generating staples, recontextualized through the lens of the Turtles' underground city life and mystical connections to the Foot Clan's dark arts.
The artwork was developed to evoke the moody, ink-heavy style of the original Mirage Studios comic era, prioritizing heavy shadows and sharp, jagged linework to emphasize the ritualistic nature of the subject matter. Critics of the set praised the card for its faithful adherence to the source material's visual tone, noting that it successfully integrated complex game mechanics into a theme that felt authentic to the franchise's darker, early storytelling roots.
