Where it came from
Dark Ritual was originally released in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, quickly becoming one of the most iconic cards in the game for its ability to generate rapid mana acceleration for black-aligned decks. The Secret Lair Drop series, which began in 2019, reimagines classic cards through curated, artistic themes that often deviate from traditional aesthetic norms to appeal to collectors and fans of specific visual styles.
This specific printing, collector number 2678, was released as part of the 'Calling All Hydra Heads' or similar curated drops, featuring stylized, avant-garde illustrations that depart from the gritty, dark fantasy roots of the original 1993 release. These collector-focused releases are generally well-received by the player base for their high-quality foiling processes and the involvement of acclaimed illustrators who bring a unique, modern interpretation to legendary spells.
