Where it came from
Dark Ritual, a staple black mana spell in Magic: The Gathering, was first introduced in the game's Alpha set in 1993. It occupies a storied place in the game's history as an efficient engine for explosive plays, allowing players to generate three black mana for the cost of one. This specific iteration is part of the Secret Lair Drop series, a specialty line introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019 to provide stylized, artist-driven reimaginings of iconic cards for collectors.
This version of Dark Ritual, cataloged as collector number 2665, features distinctive, thematic artwork designed to lean into the dark, occult aesthetic associated with the spell. By collaborating with various illustrators, the Secret Lair series allows for artistic departures from traditional game art styles. This particular drop was released to offer a premium, limited-availability collectible that reflects the enduring mechanical power of the card while serving as a visual centerpiece for fans of the game's gothic fantasy themes.
