Where it came from
Dark Ritual was originally printed in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a cornerstone of black mana acceleration. The card functions by sacrificing one black mana to produce three, a powerful tempo play that has defined the speed and strategy of the game since its inception. Over decades, it has remained a staple in competitive formats, particularly in black-based combo decks that aim to deploy significant threats ahead of the traditional mana curve.
The Masters 25 version, featuring collector number 82, was released in 2018 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the game. The illustration for this specific printing utilizes the classic artwork by Christopher Rush, which depicts a haunting, atmospheric scene of dark magic. This reprint was aimed at both long-term players and new collectors, serving as a nostalgic tribute to one of the most iconic and mechanically impactful cards in the history of the trading card game.
