Where it came from
Dark Ritual, a staple black instant in Magic: The Gathering, was originally released in the game's 1993 debut set, Alpha. The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, was designed as a high-end, non-tournament-legal commemorative celebration of the game's history, reprinting iconic cards from the early sets using the original art and card frame aesthetics.
The card’s illustration by Christopher Rush remains one of the most recognizable pieces of art in the game's history. By faithfully reproducing Rush's original work within a commemorative frame, the 30th Anniversary Edition sought to honor the visual legacy of the game's foundational era, though its release sparked significant discourse among players regarding its collector-focused nature and price point.
