Dark Ritual

Dark Ritual was originally released as a common card in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a foundational element of the Black color's identity. The card allows a player to sacrifice a small amount of mana to gain a sudden surge of three black mana, perfectly capturing the theme of dark magic at a steep personal cost. It quickly became one of the most powerful and iconic spells in the game's history, defining the aggressive potential of Black-based decks for decades.

The version from the Battle Royale Box Set, released in 1999, is notable for featuring the updated art by Scott Kirschner. While the original Alpha art by Christopher Rush is perhaps more famous for its stark, menacing simplicity, Kirschner’s contribution brought a more detailed, illustrative style to the card. The Battle Royale set was curated to introduce new players to the strategic depth of the game through pre-constructed decks, and the inclusion of Dark Ritual served as a classic example of the high-impact utility cards that solidified the game's competitive legacy.
