Where it came from
Dark Ritual is one of the most iconic spells in Magic: The Gathering, originally debuting in the Alpha set of 1993 as a fundamental tool for black-aligned decks to accelerate mana. Its inclusion in the 2022 Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck series reflects Wizards of the Coast's collaborative effort to marry the game's mechanics with the grimdark aesthetic of the Games Workshop universe. This specific version, collector number 196, was designed to fit seamlessly into the Ruinous Powers preconstructed deck, emphasizing themes of chaos and corruption.
The artwork for this printing was executed by artist Greg Staples, who is widely recognized for his dark, moody contributions to both Magic: The Gathering and various Warhammer illustrations. Staples intended to capture the visceral, occult energy of the setting, moving away from traditional fantasy tropes to embrace the industrial and Warp-touched horror inherent in the 40k lore. The card was well-received by players for its thematic integration, providing a functional reprint that feels authentically tied to the source material's visual identity.
