Double-Faced Substitute Card

The Double-Faced Substitute Card was introduced by Wizards of the Coast for the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt set to assist players in managing double-faced cards during gameplay. Because these cards feature different card faces on the front and back, they cannot be used in a standard deck without opaque sleeves or a representative card. This substitute card serves as an official checklist, allowing players to mark which specific card from the set they are representing, thereby maintaining the structural integrity of their card sleeves while playing.

The design of these cards focuses on functional clarity and thematic consistency with the gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane. Illustrators were tasked with creating a minimalist, easily readable layout that distinguishes the card from the actual deck contents while incorporating the set's iconic iconography. Upon release, the inclusion of these cards was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community, as it effectively solved the logistical challenge of shuffling and playing cards that would otherwise reveal their identity through the back of a sleeve.
