Where it came from
The double-faced substitute card was introduced by Wizards of the Coast to address the practical challenges of using double-faced cards in Magic: The Gathering. As double-faced cards have different information on the front and back, they require opaque card sleeves or a substitute checklist card to remain indistinguishable from the rest of a player's deck while in the library or hand. These checklist cards serve as placeholders, allowing players to utilize the unique mechanics of transformation without compromising the integrity of their hidden information.
The Strixhaven: School of Mages iteration of the substitute card was designed to align with the aesthetic identity of the set's five magical colleges. The design follows the established functional template for checklist cards, providing a blank surface for players to mark which double-faced card from the expansion they are representing. By prioritizing utility, the card ensures that the complex gameplay of the set remains accessible and fair, reflecting the design team's commitment to maintaining functional consistency across diverse mechanical themes.
