Double-Faced Substitute Card

The Double-Faced Substitute Card was introduced as a functional utility piece within the Modern Horizons 3 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These cards were designed by Wizards of the Coast to address the practical challenge of using double-faced cards in a deck, as they require opaque sleeves to be indistinguishable from the rest of the cards when face down. By using a substitute card, players can represent their double-faced card while keeping it safely stored outside of the main deck until it enters play.

The visual design of these cards follows the established aesthetic language of modern Magic supplemental sets, prioritizing clarity and space for player notes. The layout serves as a checklist or placeholder, reinforcing the game's mechanics regarding transformation and card state. Like previous iterations of substitute cards in the game's history, they were included in randomized booster packs to ensure that players had the necessary components to participate in the set's specific gameplay dynamics without needing to compromise the integrity of their card sleeves.
