Double-Faced Substitute Card

The Double-Faced Substitute Card was introduced by Wizards of the Coast for the 2020 expansion set Zendikar Rising. This inclusion was born of a functional necessity, designed to facilitate the use of double-faced cards in Magic: The Gathering decks. Because these cards feature artwork on both sides, they cannot be played in opaque sleeves without the risk of marked card infractions or the need to remove the card from the sleeve to view the back side during play.

The design of these cards is utilitarian, featuring a clean, minimalist layout that allows players to mark which specific double-faced card is represented in their deck. By checking a box on the card, players can easily signify which permanent is being played while using the actual card as a reference during gameplay. These substitute cards were received as a welcome quality-of-life improvement by the player base, providing a standardized and professional alternative to the makeshift paper tokens or checklists that had been utilized in previous sets featuring similar mechanics.
